Introduction

To Know and Be Known

One of the deepest desires of the human heart is to know and be known. Psalm 23 reveals the beauty of a relationship with God as our Shepherd, a relationship built not merely on provision or blessings but on intimacy.

To know God and to be known by Him is the sweetest and purest form of relationship we can experience. Before God gives us His gifts, He desires that we first encounter the Giver. Before He provides for our needs, He wants us to know Him as our Provider. Throughout Scripture, God continually reveals Himself through His names, each one displaying a different aspect of His character and His love for His people.

When we truly know our Shepherd, worry gives way to trust, fear gives way to peace, and uncertainty gives way to confidence in His care.

The Lord My Shepherd

Psalm 23:1 — "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."

Everything begins with recognizing God as our Shepherd. A shepherd leads, protects, provides for, and cares for his flock.

The question is not whether God is a Shepherd, but whether He is your Shepherd. We make the Lord our Shepherd when we surrender our lives to His leadership and allow Him to be Lord over every area of our lives.

When we know our Shepherd, we can rest in His guidance and trust His plans for us.

Jehovah-Jireh

The Lord My Provider

Genesis 22:14 — "So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide."

God revealed Himself to Abraham as Jehovah-Jireh, the God who provides.

Before God provided the sacrifice, He first revealed Himself to Abraham. This teaches us that God's greatest desire is not merely to meet our needs but to draw us into a deeper relationship with Him.

When we know God as our Provider, we stop placing our trust in circumstances and begin trusting the One who holds every resource in His hands.

Jehovah-Shalom

The Lord Our Peace

Judges 6:24 — "The Lord is Peace."

True peace is not the absence of problems but the presence of God.

Life will bring challenges, uncertainty, and difficulties, but knowing God as Jehovah-Shalom allows us to remain secure even in the midst of life's storms.

The Shepherd brings peace to the hearts of those who trust Him.

Jehovah-Rapha

The Lord My Healer

Exodus 15:26 — "I am the Lord who heals you."

God is not only concerned with physical healing but also with the restoration of the soul.

Psalm 23 reminds us that the Shepherd restores our souls. He mends what is broken, heals what is wounded, and brings wholeness to every area of our lives.

Just as a shepherd carefully tends an injured sheep, God lovingly restores us through His grace.

When a shepherd corrects an injured sheep, the process of healing often requires the shepherd to keep the sheep close. In the same way, God's correction is never meant to push us away, it is designed to draw us nearer to Him.

The Lord Our Righteousness

Jeremiah 23:6 — "The Lord Our Righteous Savior."

The Shepherd leads His sheep along the right paths.

Without Jesus guiding our lives, what appears right to us can often lead to destruction. Our own wisdom is limited, but God's ways are always good and trustworthy.

Because of Christ, we can walk confidently in righteousness and security, knowing that He leads us according to His perfect will.

The Lord, Ever-Present

Ezekiel 48:35 — "The Lord is there."

One of God's greatest promises is His presence.

No matter what season we face, we never walk alone. The Shepherd remains with His sheep through every valley, challenge, and victory.

Knowing God means recognizing that He is always present, always near, and always faithful.

Jehovah-Nissi

The Lord Our Banner

Exodus 17:15 — "Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner."

A banner represents identity, belonging, and victory.

When God is our banner, our identity is no longer defined by our failures, fears, achievements, or circumstances. Our identity is found in Him.

The Shepherd gives His people a new identity and a new purpose.

Just as Jacob was transformed after receiving God's correction, his identity changed from Jacob to Israel. His encounter with God changed not only his name but also his destiny.

Call to Action

This week, take time to deepen your relationship with the Shepherd.

Spend time meditating on the names of God and what they reveal about His character.

Trust God as your Shepherd in areas where you are tempted to worry.

Allow His correction to draw you closer rather than push you away.

Seek the Giver before seeking the gift.

Find your identity in God's presence and promises.

As we grow in knowing God and allowing ourselves to be known by Him, we discover the peace, security, and intimacy that can only be found in the care of the Good Shepherd.

God's greatest gift is not what He gives us, it is the opportunity to know Him personally.

Key Verse · The Shepherd

Psalm 23:1-6

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
